The Benefits of Traditional Advertising in the Digital Age
Martech Outlook | Thursday, March 02, 2023
Traditional media channels have a higher reach, attention, and engagement than digital channels.
FREMONT, CA: Digital marketing and ecosystems have dominated marketing budget growth for over a decade. In response, marketers switched from traditional advertising to digital channels as consumers moved from static media to perpetual media on the go. Traditional media lost some appeal as consumers switched from stationary to perpetual media on the go. Among B2C service companies, B2C product companies predict that traditional advertising spending will increase the most, followed by B2C service companies. A further irony is that companies that make 100 percent of their sales online are leading this shift, with traditional advertising spending predicting an 11.7 percent increase over the next 12 months.
Digital clutter: In the age of digital communication, consumers have become numb to conventional digital advertising because they spend most of their waking hours online. As a result of digital advertising clutter, they report frustration and a negative brand association as they cannot read articles, watch videos, or browse websites. HubSpot found, for example, that 57 percent of participants disliked ads playing before videos, and 43 percent did not watch them at all. Due to this, marketers are looking for ways to stand out.

Traditional advertising: As a result of the same MarketingSherpa survey, print advertising, television advertising, direct mail advertising, and radio advertising are all the most trusted advertising formats among customers. As a result of this research, consumers in the UK and the US overwhelmingly trust traditional advertising over social media advertising, such as television, radio, and print. Traditional advertising is important to build brand credibility and trust with tired consumers.
Third-party cookies: A third-party cookie has been used by marketers for years to track website visitors, improving the user experience and targeting consumers with targeted ads based on their search preferences. Google is phasing out third-party cookies by late 2023, and Apple is implementing changes to its iOS14 operating system to do the same. CMO Survey results indicate that 19.8 percent of companies have increased spending on traditional advertising. Marketers will need to concentrate on broadening their reach without advanced data-driven targeting due to these inevitable changes to advertising.
