Aligning Data, Creativity, and Customer Experience in Modern Ecommerce

Samantha Gann
Samantha Gann is Director of Ecommerce and Digital Marketing at John Boos & Co, where she leads digital strategy, customer experience, and growth initiatives. She focuses on aligning data, creativity, and technology to build cohesive, high-performing ecommerce ecosystems that drive engagement and results.
Leadership Shaped By Growth and Uncertainty
When I think about what has most shaped my approach to leadership in ecommerce and digital marketing, it really comes down to learning how to navigate both growth and uncertainty. Early in my career, I learned that success in digital isn’t driven by a single channel or tactic. It’s the result of aligning merchandising, marketing, technology, and customer experience around a unified goal. Leading teams through both rapid growth periods and more challenging cycles has taught me the importance of staying grounded in data while also fostering creativity and resilience. Those cycles force clarity, sharpen decision-making, and ultimately build stronger, more agile teams. As a leader, I focus not just on outcomes, but on building processes and communication that bring teams together.
Evolving Customer Expectations in Online Shopping
The customer continues to change faster than ever. Today’s online shopper expects more and expects it effortlessly. Convenience is a given. Speed, transparency, and personalization are no longer differentiators; they are requirements. What stands out now is how seamlessly a brand can deliver that experience while also inspiring confidence. Customers want to feel informed and assured in their decisions, which means the role of content has expanded. It’s no longer just about presenting a product; it’s about telling a story, providing education, and creating a sense of trust. I see a strong blend between content and commerce, where the lines between inspiration and transaction are intentionally blurred.
Balancing Creative Storytelling with Data-Driven Strategy
That evolution has made the balance between creativity and data even more important. For me, it’s never been about choosing one over the other. It’s about knowing how they inform each other. Data gives us direction. It highlights what’s working, where customers are engaging, and where we’re losing them, but it’s creativity that brings data to life making someone stop, connect, and ultimately act. I’ve found that the most effective strategies come from using data to guide the “what,” while allowing creativity to shape the “how.” Testing is what brings those two together. It creates a feedback loop that allows you to continuously refine both your message and your experience in a meaningful way.
Trends Transforming Ecommerce and Customer Engagement
There are a few trends right now that I find transformative. The rise of AI and automation is changing how we think about personalization, not just as a tactic, but as a scalable strategy. At the same time, social platforms are becoming more integrated into the shopping journey, which is shifting how customers discover and engage with our brand. Another major shift is the growing importance of first-party data. As the landscape evolves around privacy, brands are being pushed to build more direct, value-driven relationships with their customers. The expectation of a seamless Omni channel experience hasn’t gone away, it’s only intensified.
Advice for Building a Career in Ecommerce and Digital Marketing
For anyone looking to build a career in ecommerce and digital marketing, my biggest advice is to stay curious and say yes. You can thrive if you are willing to test, learn, and adapt quickly, both professionally and personally. It’s important to understand the full ecosystem, but also to go deep on a subject where you can build real expertise. Don’t underestimate the value of being hands-on. Always say yes to learning something new. Some of the most valuable insights come from being in the platforms, analyzing performance, and seeing how small changes can drive meaningful results.
Just as importantly, learn how to collaborate. The best ideas and outcomes rarely come from one person or one team. Also, never lose sight of the customer. Tools, platforms, and trends will continue to evolve, but a genuine understanding of your customers’ needs, behaviors, and motivations will always be at the center of great digital marketing.
