Harmonizing Automation and Human Expertise for Seamless Communication

How has your journey been in the PR and marketing space?
Marta Grutka
Over the past three decades, my professional journey has taken me across the globe, starting from the United States. It all began in the late eighties when I I landed my first job at the World Trade Center in New York City, working for American Express Banks. I focused on VVIP engagement, events, and contributed articles to renowned magazines like Travel and Leisure and Food and Wine. From there, I ventured from New York City to both coasts of the United States, as well as Europe and eventually settled in the Asia Pacific region for the past 20 years.
What sets my career apart is the early emphasis on research and thought leadership. During my initial years, I worked on predictive and consultancy projects for organizations like DRI and McGraw Hill, even providing reports for what eventually became the European Union. However, it was my time at America Online (AOL) that truly shaped my expertise in strategic communications. Back in the late nineties, when mobile devices were not as prevalent, we were at the forefront of integrating digital strategies and understanding user behavior online. This early experience allowed us to anticipate and cater to people's desires in the digital realm.
What challenges have you encountered while implementing PR and marketing strategies during your journey?
Having a background in strategic communications has given me valuable insights into the business as a whole, enabling me to shape strategic decisions and safeguard the organization's reputation. However, in the post-Covid era, both employee relations (ER) and marketing professionals face a significant challenge I call "marketing internally." There is mounting pressure to deliver immediate results and prove the value of communication efforts, often neglecting the importance of thoughtful strategies. Marketers are burdened with the expectation of instant outcomes from content campaigns that may lack long-term value.
Achieving internal alignment within dispersed teams becomes harder as demands and expectations escalate in an ever-evolving landscape. The media industry's remarkable transformation brings both exciting opportunities and worrisome concerns, necessitating a careful balance. Another hurdle is achieving internal alignment, especially within globally or regionally dispersed teams. The ever-increasing demands and expectations placed on professionals make it difficult to effectively synchronize efforts and keep pace with the rapidly evolving communication landscape.
"Striking a delicate equilibrium between automation and human expertise is imperative for impeccable communication endeavors."
Hence, it is crucial to explore innovative approaches to meet the demands of today's fast-paced environment, but a careful balance between automation and human expertise is necessary to ensure high-quality communication efforts.
How does AI assist in maintaining internal alignment within organizations?
Although I wouldn't attribute the effectiveness solely to AI, I believe that certain collaboration tools and platforms employed by companies can greatly facilitate the process. In my current organization, we heavily rely on tools like Teams, among others, to enhance collaboration. However, during my previous tenure at cialfo, Slack played a pivotal role in enabling real-time cross-country collaboration, which impressed me greatly. When utilized correctly, fundamental tools like Slack and Google Docs possess significant power as they bring everyone together, fostering inclusive discussions. This shared experience allows individuals to contribute and consequently promote a sense of ownership and commitment.
Are there any upcoming technologies or trends in the industry that you are excited about and looking forward to using?
One aspect that I find remarkable and valuable in team dynamics is the ability to unify and empower teams. However, I have noticed a lack of comprehensive solutions that serve as a one-stop shop for all necessary tools and functionalities. Many technology providers offer most of what is needed, but not everything, which leads to a time-consuming and frustrating process of engaging with multiple platforms. Moreover, this approach can be costly since investments are required in multiple platforms instead of having a single solution.
While there is a multitude of impressive technologies available, none of them truly address the complete end-to-end communication needs, including reporting and measurement.
What advice would you offer to senior leaders or CXOs in the marketing and PR space?
One crucial piece of advice I would emphasize is the importance of holistic thinking and adopting a "less is more" approach. By this, I mean identifying one to five key actions that can be consistently implemented to have the most significant impact across the entire organization. Rather than constantly chasing after the latest trends or jumping on every new idea or campaign that arises, it is crucial to exercise patience and carefully evaluate the potential long-term effects. Taking an integrated approach by bringing together brand marketing, communications, and PR, and aligning them with the overall business goals, can yield more favorable outcomes and maximize the value of your investments.
