Foundations Shaping Digital Marketing and Branding Approach

My approach is grounded in academic training and hands-on experience. With a degree in Journalism and a Master’s in Advertising, I learned the fundamentals of communications, marketing research and branding. Journalism trained me to write with precision and integrity, which continues to shape how I craft brand narratives and build trust. My interest in branding deepened early on, influenced by books like Branding in Asia and Harvard Business Review on Brand Management.

I began my career in 2001 as a Web Content Editor for a Chinese‑Filipino community website and later transitioned within the same company to a digital marketer role with its website design and software development arm. There, I helped launch the Philippines’ first online overseas recruitment site. These early projects revealed how writing for the web powered Search Engine Optimization (SEO), positioning me among the country’s first SEO practitioners. That foundation was followed by seven years in a corporate environment and three years running my own agency remotely, managing clients across the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Germany, all from home, while raising my child as a single mom.

In 2011, I entered hospitality by managing E-Commerce for French luxury brand Sofitel in Manila and the relaunch of Spiral Restaurant, establishing it as the most interactive dining destination in Asia‑Pacific. At Discovery Hospitality, I worked across the group’s diverse portfolio of 4‑ and 5‑star brands. In 2020, I expanded horizontally into branding, taking on rebranding, execution and governance in addition to creation, amplification and codification. I led the development of brand books for both Discovery‑owned properties and third‑party clients.

These experiences shaped my philosophy: a brand is a promise consistently delivered and at its core is always the product. Marketing fuels that promise, but if the product falls short, campaigns cannot be sustained. Consistency across every click, search and guest interaction keeps the promise intact. When that consistency is paired with an authentic and remarkable experience, it creates brand love, which is the emotional connection that turns guests into loyal advocates.

Balancing Brand Storytelling with Performance Marketing

Storytelling builds emotional connection and brand equity, but marketing must evolve from being seen as an expense center to a growth engine. We cannot take vanity metrics to the bank. I see it as a balance across the funnel. Stories sell the dream; performance drives the booking. Strong brand campaigns make performance marketing more effective. Instead of hard selling, I focus on storytelling that inspires travel, builds affinity and keeps the brand top of mind. Purchasing decisions are not always rational and the brands that win are those people feel connected to.

At the same time, I stay close to the numbers. By overseeing campaigns, shaping our tech stack and choosing the right partners, I ensure creative work is grounded in data. ROI is the language that connects creative and commercial outcomes. This approach has shifted our revenue mix toward direct bookings, reaching as high as 83% for one property and 60 percent groupwide versus OTAs' 40 percent.

Delivering Seamless Omnichannel Guest Experiences

In hospitality, the biggest challenge is dismantling silos to achieve a true omnichannel experience. Guests move fluidly across smart engines, search, social, OTAs, direct booking platforms, and even offline, expecting seamless recognition. Friction arises when data fails to follow the guest. Our role is to make technology seamless enough for the human aspect of hospitality to stand out. As tech giants with vast resources, OTAs widen the gap, leaving independent properties struggling to compete. Meanwhile, AI further disrupts booking behavior, driving up the cost per acquisition for hotels.

"Technology should enable us to connect more humanly, with more people, more often and more meaningfully."

Hospitality is both digital and physical, or phygital. Digital may be the first touchpoint, but the full experience happens on property. The challenge is making those two worlds feel connected. At Discovery, the opportunity lies in translating our legendary Filipino service into hyper‑personalized phygital experiences at scale.

Leveraging Data Personalization and Customer Insights

I have always seen data as the foundation of branding and growth. I use analytics and market insights to shape campaigns, optimize performance, and refine strategy. Storytelling matters, but when backed by data, it becomes a superpower.

Data helps us understand intent, guide guests through the funnel, and drive higher-value direct bookings. It also enables more meaningful personalization. In luxury hospitality, what feels special to one guest may not be the same for another. The challenge is delivering that level of personalization consistently across properties and markets. Brand love is built when insights translate into experiences that feel personal and memorable.

This approach has delivered strong results, including outperforming APAC benchmarks in direct bookings and achieving ROI above global averages. I also contributed to the Digital Travel APAC Benchmarking Reports (2023 and 2026), reflecting my commitment to helping shape industry standards.

Evolving Digital Marketing in Guest Centric Ecosystems

Digital marketing today is defined by guest centricity, powered by data and personalization. We are moving away from transactional marketing toward more predictive, experience-driven engagement. Guests no longer compare hotels only to other hotels. They compare them to the seamless experiences of global tech platforms.

At the same time, technology, especially AI, should deepen and scale the human side of hospitality, not replace it. In a world risking over-transaction, the brands that will stand out are those that create and sustain genuine emotional connection. Having worked in this space for over two decades, I have seen the shift from basic content to complex, AI-driven ecosystems. Technology should enable us to connect more humanly, with more people, more often, and more meaningfully.
